Ex After all the Bible does declare that faith without works is dead! James I hope my point of view was helpful the other point of view was very helpful to me. May the Lord bless you all! They were set aside for priestly duties. When we are on the side of salvation Jesus then we are safe. This was where the levites proved themselves faithful to God. As Elias Kanunu also hinted, I think that God chose to bestow upon them this priestlyhood as God decided to favour Leah as she was not loved by her husband Jacob.
However, this is not exactly true. Aaron and his sons were chosen before Israel made the golden calf. Numerous verses in Exodus 28 confirm this. The chapter opens with the words. Exodus NASB.
Consider the below scripture:. Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priesthood a holy nation.. Exo And about three thousand men of the people fell that day. Exo …. God chose Levites because they were not only on the side of God but were ready to execute the righteous judgement of God over grave wickedness of Idolatry.
Luke But you go…. In other words, Levites suppressed their human emotions and relations for the sake of God… this is Loving God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength… this is First love…. God chose them… such people will go way beyond to serve the living God..
I happened to pass by dear brethren, as I seek for ways to discuss why Levites are very significant in the praise and worship part of a service. Victor B. I actually got to this page while I was searching for what liberated the Levites and set them up for greatness. As we all know, Levi was cursed alongside his two elder brothers by their father Jacob because of their sins. His sins however reduced him to one of the smallest among the tribes.
Third, priests and Levites are presented in Chronicles as having both prophetic and scribal functions; they are described in prophetic categories: The spirit of YHWH come upon them and they also perform their duties with prophetic authority by using prophetic speech forms in their speeches 2 Chr ; ; cf.
Last but not least, there is, in all the discussion words, a remarkable frequency of formulas marking divine speech, which are well known from other prophetic books and are applied to legitimize the words of the prophets.
Thus, the voice behind or the author of the six discussion words in the book of Malachi - whether he was a priest or a Levite - criticizes the priests' conduct of the offerings with prophetic authority. With the same legitimacy he predicts that the temple personnel, "the descendants of Levi", who probably include priests and Levites, will be purified and again bring offerings to YHWH in righteousness.
Thus, we arrive at the conclusion that the voice behind - or the author of - the passages in the book of Malachi may have been an inspired temple preacher or writer, who probably belonged to the ranks of priests or Levites, and conveyed his message with prophetic authority.
He was a voice of the late 5 th century, 18 who, like his predecessors, the prophets in pre-exilic times, criticised the cult practices of the priests. His predecessors criticised the sacrificial cult of not being accompanied by social justice Isa ; 19 Amos []. We do find similar reasons for the rebuke of the cult in the book of Malachi Mal ; cf.
For this reason, the cult was corrupt and the offerings were rejected. This affected not only the priests, who had corrupted the covenant of Levi; the consequences of their failure were fatal for the whole sacrificial cult including the Levites.
Therefore, the descendants of Levi, who included both priests and Levites, had to be purified. The message in the promise related in Mal conveys that YHWH will send his messenger; he will purify them and only after their purification will the priests and the Levites present offerings to YHWH in righteousness, as they had done in the days of old, in the wilderness.

For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel Genesis Both Simeon and Levi would be divided and scattered because of their violence. In fulfillment of this, the Simeonites obtained land within the territory of Judah Joshua and the Levites received no land Joshua , 33; ; Instead, the Levites received 48 cities distributed throughout Israel among the other tribes Numbers ; ; Joshua Moses interceded for Israel but made the Israelites drink the water with the ground up powder of the calf Exodus Come to me.
This episode recalls the violence of their ancestor Levi Genesis This is the origin of the priesthood in Israel. Whereas God originally consecrated the firstborn sons of the Israelites Exodus , now He chose the tribe of Levi to take that place in His service Numbers , 41, So we see that the same violent nature that lost the Levites land also gained them the priesthood. While the Levites did not receive land as an inheritance in Canaan, this was also used for good.
This included the six cities of refuge Joshua , 21 27, 32, 36, 38; cf. So, the explanation goes, if Jacob counts backward from his youngest son, the 10th son is Levi. Thus, Levi is tithed to God in the priestly service. When God killed all of the firstborn in Egypt he passed over the houses of those Hebrews who had put blood on their door mantels:. Exodus And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
And in return for passing over those children of Israel, he declared that all the firstborn of Israel both human and livestock be dedicated to him. I will not go into what that dedication meant since it has no bearing on your question. Exodus Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. Numbers and 46 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am the LORD.
So the entire tribe of Levi became thr redemption for all the firstborn children of the other eleven tribes. Gen was indeed a prophecy concerning Simeon and Levi. Moses was first taken away from Israel during his birth after Pharaoh ordered the killing of male child that was born.
The prophecy written in Gen is then fulfilled when Moses killed the Egyptian who was beating a hebrew slave. Moses later ran away from Pharaoh and fled to Midian after Pharaoh heard the news of the Egyptian that he killed.
This is written in Exodus Here we see that Levi tribe was chosen and the representative was Moses who became the promised pastor at that time and led Israelites out of Egypt Hell to Canaan Heaven. From Wikipedia :. The books of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers maintain that Aaron received from God a monopoly over the priesthood for himself and his male descendants Exodus The family of Aaron had the exclusive right and responsibility to make offerings on the altar to the God of Israel.
The rest of his tribe, the Levites, were given subordinate responsibilities within the sanctuary Numbers 3. Moses anointed and consecrated Aaron and his sons to the priesthood, and arrayed them in the robes of office Leviticus 8; cf.
Exodus He also related to them God's detailed instructions for performing their duties while the rest of the Israelites listened Leviticus , Aaron and his successors as high priest were given control over the Urim and Thummim by which the will of God could be determined Exodus God commissioned the Aaronide priests to distinguish the holy from the common and the clean from the unclean, and to teach the divine laws the Torah to the Israelites Leviticus The priests were also commissioned to bless the people Numbers When Aaron completed the altar offerings for the first time and, with Moses, "blessed the people: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people: And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat [which] when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces" Leviticus In this way, the institution of the Aaronide priesthood was established.
