While it lasted for six seasons and developed a loyal following for its stellar cast, Cougar Town never quite escaped its potentially off-putting title. That said, the show was the centerpiece in an ongoing Community storyline about Abed's Danny Pudi increasingly obsessive fandom. And like I'm always saying, if it's good enough for Abed, it's good enough for me.
It feels appropriate to quote a song when talking about the first season of High Fidelity : You don't know what you got 'til it's gone. And in the case of this tragically cancelled series, we didn't really appreciate just how good this unconventional TV reboot of the John Cusack romantic comedy was. Featuring Zoe Kravitz as a gender-flipped record store owner going back through her previous relationships after a bad breakup, High Fidelity featured a killer soundtrack overseen by none other than Questlove , along with a strong supporting cast including Da'Vine Joy Randolph as, essentially, the show's Jack Black equivalent wild perhaps in concept, but in execution actually kind of perfect and David H.
Holmes as a Todd Louiso fill-in whose breakout episode was one of the show's best. While the shadow of what came before did linger over the first season, there was a ton of potential for the future in this premise, and while it's bittersweet to watch as a result, it's still deeply enjoyable. A five-season series that may not have been appreciated properly in its time, Damages was an early hit for FX, premiering in with plenty of star power: Not only did the legal thriller spotlight perennial Oscar nominee Glenn Close and star-on-the-rise Rose Byrne , but the case at the center of Season 1 focused on the criminal misdeeds of Arthur Frobisher Ted Danson , with Season 2 moving onto a new trial that brought in new players like William Hurt , Marcia Gay Harden , Timothy Olyphant , and more.
Beyond the caliber of its actors, though, the show stuck out for its innovative plotting, with each episode jumping between time periods as a core mystery unfolded in both the past and the future; while future seasons showed a decreasing return on value, it remained a compelling drama that's worthy of consideration, even here in the era of peak TV.
While the ABC sitcom Modern Family may feel a tad dated now, it's easy to forget this comedy was an absolute juggernaut when it first aired. The show ran for 11 seasons in total, and won the Emmy award for Best Comedy Series for its first five seasons on the air. Drawing heavy influence from The Office , this is a family sitcom in mockumentary style that follows the exploits of one family: Husband and wife Phil and Claire and their three children, Claire's father and his new wife and her child, and Claire's brother and his husband.
A TV adaptation of the critically acclaimed mockumentary movie What We Do in the Shadows has no business being this good, but the FX sequel series gets better and better with each episode. In the vein of The Office , the show follows a group of vampires who live in modern day Staten Island, but instead of focusing on supernatural threats, the show largely revolves around behaviorial humor and roommate disputes — and it's all the better for it.
The series does have a rich mythology in the background that bubbles to the surface every now and then as a serialized hook, but the joy of this show is watching these characters who have lived with one another for a very, very, very long time try to remain friends and lovers.
If you love shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation , you'll fall for Superstore in a heartbeat. The half-hour NBC comedy series ran for six seasons and is a workplace comedy that takes place in a fictional Big Box store in St. America Ferrera plays one of the store's veteran employees who works hard to make a living for her husband and daughter; Ben Feldman is a new hire fresh out of college whose naive optimism bumps up against the harsh realities of working retail.
Indeed, anyone who's worked retail will relate hard to the struggles of the characters in Superstore , which hits that sweet spot of funny and emotional that made shows like The Office so irresistible. If you like thrillers — especially spy or political thrillers — then Homeland is a must-watch. The first season of this Showtime series is still the best and the one that won the Best Drama Series Emmy award , but all eight seasons have value.
