When was milly dowler phone hacked

I believe it is. Unparalleled moments need unparalleled action. Showing we get it is important for us and for Rubicon. You could be the person to save the Rubicon deal. A second linked claim was that the deletion of the missing girl's messages was the most important part of the Guardian's story. A search of a news database reveals that in the period between the article first being published and News International announcing the closure of the News of the World, national newspapers published stories about the hacking of Milly's phone.

In his report, Sir Brian Leveson wrote: "The fact remains that the News of the World had hacked the phone of a dead schoolgirl. The revelation of that story rightly shocked the public conscience in a way that other stories of phone-hacking may not have, but it also gave momentum to growing calls for light to be shed on an unethical and unlawful practice of which there were literally thousands of victims.

In that context, whether or not News of the World journalists had caused the 'false hope' moment is almost irrelevant. Beyond that, there is significantly more doubt about the facts of the deletions than was acknowledged in the storm of reporting about which the Dowler family's lawyer complained. The final account of police inquiries into the subject was written by a Scotland Yard detective, DCI John MacDonald, and is available in abridged form under his name on the Leveson inquiry website.

The report said: "It is not possible to state with any certainty whether Milly's voicemails were or were not deleted. The Guardian investigation has shown that, within a very short time of Milly vanishing, News of the World journalists reacted by engaging in what was standard practice in their newsroom: they hired private investigators to get them a story.

Their first step was simple, albeit illegal. Paperwork seen by the Guardian reveals that they paid a Hampshire private investigator, Steve Whittamore, to obtain home addresses and, where necessary, ex-directory phone numbers for any families called Dowler in the Walton area. The three addresses Whittamore found could be obtained lawfully on the electoral register.

Then, with the help of its own full-time private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, the News of the World started illegally intercepting mobile phone messages. As her friends and parents called and left messages imploring Milly to get in touch with them, the News of the World was listening and recording their every private word.

But the journalists at the News of the World then encountered a problem. Apparently thirsty for more information from more voicemails, the paper intervened — and deleted the messages that had been left in the first few days after her disappearance. They found no evidence of any conspiracy or collusive relationship between officers and the tabloid, which ceased publication in after the scandal emerged, or any other media. The report said the force had prioritised finding Milly and bringing her killer to justice, but admitted investigating officers should have been aware of the News of the World's actions.
